Cairns is renowned for it's nightclubs for a couple of reasons. Firstly, they can be uncontrollably wild. Some Cairns nightclubs are great places for young single travellers to enjoy after-hours activities that can't be mentioned on a family friendly website like this one.
Another factor that makes clubbing in Cairns so much fun is the rivalry between the clubs. All the nightclubs are within walking distance of each other, so a night out can be spent at half a dozen different locations that offer all kinds of different music and atmospheres. The competitiveness between the clubs means we, as patrons, get cheaper deals and better value.
The Playpen nightclub is located on the corner of Lake & Hartley Streets. It has a large dance floor flanked by two bars, pool tables, and ample room for ‘spectators'. This is a very popular place for people under the age of 20, but over the age of 18 of course. Which brings up a good point – don't bother even thinking about entering any Cairns nightclub if you are under the age of 18. The bouncers are extremely vigilant and are known to refuse entry to people who are 30 years old but have forgotten their identification.

The Woolshed is the wildest club in Cairns without a doubt. It is frequented mostly by backpackers, and people who like backpackers. It is always crammed full of people, so it is difficult to move around without touching other people. That's not always such a bad thing.
Cairns is even lucky enough to have a nightclub located on one of the tropical islands nearby in the Coral Sea. A one-hour ferry ride takes patrons to the island club on Fitzroy Island, where they can dance the night away and return on the ferry to Cairns at midnight. The atmosphere in this club is very relaxed and open, and it is particularly appealing because if you need a break from the dance floor, you can just wander down to the beach and have a quick swim. Then get dressed again and get back on the floor. Tell me any other nightclub where you can do that!
